Books Profile Two Distinct Television Personalities

immense talent would diminish. I'm happy to report that this was not the case.

"Sunday Nights At Seven" was co-written by Joan Benny, the adopted daughter and only child of Jack and Mary Benny. It is clear from the book, and the personal photos, that she was indeed the apple of her father's eye.

Ms. Benny found the uncompleted manuscript many years after her father's death. (Benny died in 1974.) She has added some of her own comments and memories to the manuscript started by her father. As a result, the book is really told from two perspectives and that makes it all the more enjoyable.

Jack Benny started his career in vaudeville. In 1939 he debuted on radio in what would be one of the longest running and most popular shows in radio history. Mr. Benny also enjoyed much success in film and on television.

Benny was also one of the most beloved entertainers in all of Hollywood. As a result, the book is a "who's who" of stories and photos featuring some of the most popular and glamorous stars in Hollywood.

The book paints a human portrait of Jack Benny and his daughter is to be complimented for her honesty in sharing some of her more intimate stories.

Though it is in no way close to being "Mommy Dearest," it is clear from the book that she got along much better with her father than her mother, Mary Livingston. (Mary Livingston was a co-star on Jack Benny's radio show.)

Fans of old time radio, the "golden age" of Hollywood and fans of Jack Benny in particular will enjoy this book. It is packed full of anecdotes, personal photos and a forward by George Burns, the real-life best friend of Jack Benny. The book was published in 1990 but can still be found in most bookstores. Enjoy.
