Cable Networks Offer Quality Programming For Viewers

MIDWIVES is an ambitious and at times thought provoking television movie coming to the LIFETIME cable network. It stars Sissy Spacek (COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER), Peter Coyote (ERIN BROCKOVICH), Piper Laurie (CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD) Terry Kinney (OZ) and Alison Pill (BABY). It is based on the best-selling fiction novel by Chris Bohjalian.

Spacek plays Sibyl Danforth, a dedicated midwife who has been delivering babies in a rural Vermont community for 15 years. The film tells the story of a birth that goes horribly wrong on an icy winter night. Believing her patient to have died while trying to give birth, Danforth is forced to perform an emergency Caesarian section in order to save the life of a baby.

Soon after the incident, questions arise as to whether or not the mother was actually dead at the time Danforth performed the Caesarian. This is critical because if the mother was not dead at that time then Danforth's actions are what killed her. She soon finds herself facing trial in a situation that threatens her family, her practice, and the support of the community in which she has lived for many years.

The cast of the film is excellent and it is nice to see Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie before the cameras again. Though the scenes of the birth were not overly graphic, I did find them difficult to watch at times. They are an important part of the story, however, and are key to determining whether or not Danforth is guilty. I'm pleased to say that viewers are left wondering what the verdict will be along with the characters in the film.

MIDWIVES is a well-made film and at times it is also very thought provoking. It is scheduled to premiere on LIFETIME television on April 2nd at 9 p.m., ET/PT. For more information on this film, check out http://www.lifetimetv.com.

One of the truly classic series in the history of television is THE OUTER LIMITS. Several years ago the series was revived on the SHOWTIME cable network and syndicated throughout the country. SHOWTIME recently cancelled the series but it was picked up again, this time by the Sci-Fi Channel.

The seventh season of THE OUTER LIMITS makes its debut on Sci-Fi with an episode entitled FAMILY VALUES. It stars Tom Arnold, Catherine Mary Stewart and Gerard Plunket. Arnold plays Jerry Miller, an overworked husband and father who believes that all his family problems will be solved
