"While we fight tribe against tribe, we will never be great. But if we
unite, we conquer. Why plunder for gold, when we can own mountains that
contain it? Why plunder for food, when we can own the fields that grow it?
Why plunder for slaves, when we can own nations? The Romans have done great
things - but their time is past. What they have done, we can do. We should
rule the world."
- Attila the Hun
The upcoming mini-series ATTILA artfully conveys those sentiments and more. I've seen an advance preview of ATTILA and recommend it very highly. ATTILA, airing on January 30 and 31 on the USA CABLE Network, is the type of epic mini-series that the broadcast networks used to make. It has a bit of everything - dazzling battle scenes, romance, intrigue, betrayal, and a good dose of history thrown in for good measure. Even more important, ATTILA has an excellent cast and a strong script. Scottish born actor Gerard Butler (DRACULA 2000) stars as the infamous warrior. Powers Boothe (GUYANA TRAGEDY: THE STORY OF JIM JONES) co-stars as Roman General Flavius Aetius, Attila's friend, mentor and adversary. Other standouts in the strong cast are: Tim Curry (THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW) as Theodosius, the Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire; Simmone Jade MacKinnon (BAYWATCH HAWAII) in a duel role as two women who played a very important part in Attila's life; and Pauline Lynch (TRAINSPOTTING) as Galen, a mystical sooth-sayer who forecasts the destiny for a young Attila. Set in the fourth century, ATTILA tells the story of one of the most feared and powerful leaders of all-time. Brutally orphaned as a young boy, Attila goes off to live with his uncle and half-brother. Attila grows up quickly and becomes a great warrior. His chief rival is his half-brother Bleda. The two have an uneasy and stormy relationship. Some of their scenes together are among the best in the mini-series. Galen, a mystical dwarf, tells Attila that he is destined for greatness if he waits for the proper time. Her prophecies prove true but they are not without a price. Attila eventually meets Flavius Aetius, a powerful Roman General. They form an uneasy alliance that is pivotal to the Attila's life. Flavius takes Attila on a trip to Rome where Attila is tempted by the Empires many treasures and beautiful women. The bulk of the mini-series dramatizes the fear that the Roman Empire had of Go To Page: 1 2 |
