'Tis The Season For Gift Giving...Even in Television

Much of the hustle and bustle of the holidays has to do with gift giving - searching for that perfect gift for that certain someone, finding just the right wrapping paper, etc. There are other types of gifts besides the material kind, however.

In honor of Christmas, the holiday that I celebrate at this time of year, my television column this week is devoted to gift giving. What follows are some of the gifts I'd like to be able to give to some of the people that are involved in the television industry. See what you think.

To the cast, crew and producers of 7TH HEAVEN I'd like to give - respect. This show is the highest rated series on the WB. Even so, it fails to get even half the amount of press devoted to other WB series such as ANGEL and BUFFY: THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. This series proves that family-oriented television can be written so that every member of the family, young or old, can enjoy it.

To the fans of the various STAR TREK series I'd like to give - a break. This is the last season for VOYAGER. Plans are already underway for a new STAR TREK series. I hope the producers have the good sense to give the STAR TREK franchise a rest for a couple of years before bringing out the new series. I'm a fan of STAR TREK going way back but even I must admit the franchise needs a rest. The time off will also give the producers a chance to get the new series right this time too.

To fans of television everywhere I'd like to be able to give - the TV LAND Network. It is a darn shame that TV LAND can only be seen by those people who can afford cable. (Even then, not every cable system carries it.) If you enjoy classic television, TV LAND is the answer to your prayers. In addition to classic series such as GUNSMOKE and DRAGNET, television fans can see rarely seen episodes of old series and specials as well.

To fans of MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL I'd like to give - a two man booth. Al Michaels and Dan Fouts are a terrific team. It is time for the producers to acknowledge that the Dennis Miller experiment didn't work out, however. I enjoy his cable series but his humor on MNF is out of place and seems forced. It was a noble experiment but it failed to score points with viewers.
