The Television Academy Honors Their BestThe big news in television this week is the broadcasting of the 52nd Annual Emmy Awards. Sponsored by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the Emmy's are designed to honor the best that television has to offer. . This year the cable networks, particularly HBO, have more Emmy nominations than ever before. Gary Shandling will serve as host. For the first time this year the academy let voters view nominated programs at home on videotape. Previously they were cooped up in screening rooms watching the nominated programs. Since younger people didn't tend to have the time to devote to attending screenings, it was felt that the results were a bit skewed. Time will tell if this tactic made a difference in the outcome. Here is a listing of some of the major categories. I've also included the name of the program that I think deserves to win. I don't have a vote in the Emmy's, this is strictly my opinion. If you disagree (or even if you agree) with my choice, feel free to post something in the discussion section of the Television section. Friendly debate about who should and should not win is half the fun of the Emmy's. Nominees for Best Dramatic Series: ER (NBC); LAW AND ORDER (NBC); THE PRACTICE (ABC); THE WEST WING (NBC); THE SOPRANOS (HBO). The show that I think should win: LAW AND ORDER (NBC). Nominees for Best Mini-Series: THE BEACH BOYS: AN AMERICAN FAMILY (ABC); THE CORNER (HBO); P.T. BARNUM (A&E); ARABIAN NIGHTS (ABC); JESUS (CBS). The mini-series that I think should win: JESUS. (CBS). Nominees for Best TV-Movie: OPRAH WINFREY PRESENTS: TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE (ABC); RK0 281 (HB0); INTRODUCING DOROTHY DANDRIDGE (A&E); IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK 2 (PBS); ANNIE (ABC). The tv-movie I think should win: ANNIE (ABC). Nominees for Best Comedy Series: EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND (CBS); FRIENDS (NBC); SEX AND THE CITY (HBO); FRASIER (NBC); WILL AND GRACE (NBC). This is the toughest category for me to pick, as I don't watch any of the programs nominated for best comedy. (I'm usually watching other programs for my columns and freelance articles.) My prediction is that FRASIER will win as the academy is usually conservative and therefore won't pick WILL AND GRACE or SEX AND THE CITY. Tune in Sunday to find out who really won! Here are my television viewing recommendations for the week starting September 9th. Enjoy Saturday, September 9th BLADE RUNNER, SCI-FI CHANNEL, 6:30 - 9 p.m., PST
