May is an important time in the television industry. It is one of the four "sweeps" months when the advertising rates are set for broadcasters. Consequently, networks and local television stations put on a lot of "stunt programming" such as blockbuster mini-series and specials.
In addition to the "sweeps," May is also when the six broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, UPN and the WB) announce their new schedules for the upcoming fall season. While no network has made their official announcement just yet, we can offer you a sneak preview of some of the shows which have already been renewed or cancelled for next season. If your show is not listed, then the final decision on its fate has yet to be made. Shows renewed for next season by FOX: ALLY McBEAL, AMERICA'S MOST WANTED, COPS, FUTURAMA, KING OF THE HILL, MALCOM IN THE MIDDLE, THE SIMPSONS, THAT '70s SHOW, TITUS, THE X-FILES (provided contracts with the stars can be worked out.) Shows renewed for next season by the WB: 7TH HEAVEN, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL, DAWSON'S CREEK, CHARMED, THE STEVE HARVEY SHOW, THE JAMIE FOXX SHOW. This Week In Television History: FALCON CREST, airs its last new episode on May 17, 1990. The series was part of CBS' popular Friday night lineup in the 80s for nine years.
