In a major shakeup, both in front of and behind the camera, former NFL quarterback turned color commentator Boomer Esiason was released from his contract at ABC. In addition to Esiason, the veteran director and producer of MNF was also let go. Veteran play-by-play man Al Michaels will remain.
ABC officials are bringing back Don Ohlmeyer, the man who used to run MNF back in the glory days of the 1970s. Though MNF remains one of ABC's highest rated and most popular series, ratings were down compared to last year. Interestingly enough, this was the first year that MNF had a two-man booth as opposed to their traditional three-man approach. Former player turned commentator Dan Deirdorf was let go at the end of last season when ABC made the change to a two man booth. ABC officials want the program to achieve the "event" status that it enjoyed during the glory days of the 1970s. That looks almost impossible. In those days there was no ESPN or any other cable outlets carrying games. MNF was one of the few nationally broadcast games. Also, like them or not, the controversial team of Frank Gifford, Don Meredith and Howard Cossell was always entertaining, even though the game itself sometimes was not. Among those who are rumored to be under consideration for the MNF booth are former coaches Jimmy Johnson and/or Bill Parcels and former player turned ESPN analyst Sterling Sharp. Stay tuned for details. Here are my television viewing recommendations for the week of March 11th.
