Here are some of the latest "News and Notes" from the world of television.
MALCOM IS ON TOP:The FOX Network has ordered three additional episodes of their new breakout series MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE. This brings the total number of new episodes for MALCOLM to 16. The series is the biggest hit of the season for FOX. The series delivers an additional 80% more adult viewers in the coveted 18-49 age group over the program that aired in its time period previously. THE BEAT Will Debut On UPN:THE BEAT, a new police drama from Barry Levinson, producer of the critically acclaimed HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET), is set to debut on UPN. The series begins its run on March 14th. The series replaces DILBERT and SHASTA MCNASTY which are going on hiatus. SYNDICATED PROGRAMMING RATINGS:Here are the ratings for the top eight original syndicated programs for the week ending January 30th, 2000. Why only eight? I couldn't get a list of the entire top ten! (Honest) 1.BACK2BACK ACTION (Consists of the new series CLEOPATRA 2625 and JACK OF ALL TRADES), Rating: 3.4 2.BEASTMASTER, Rating: 3.03.THE LOST WORLD, Rating: 2.7 4.RELIC HUNTER, Rating: 2.75.YOUR BIG BREAK, Rating: 2.2 6.BATTLE DOME, Rating: 2.17.TOTAL RECALL, Rating: 2.1 8.PETER BENCHLEY'S AMAZON, Rating: 1.8Note: Each ratings point equals approximately 1,008,000 Television Households. NEW TV PROGRAMS ARE ON THE WAY:Hollywood likes short, one sentence descriptions to describe new films and television series. Here is one of my favorite descriptions of a proposed new dramatic series called DEAD LAST. It is taken from a press release from THE WB network. "SCOOBY DOO meets THE SIXTH SENSE." As Shaggy might say, "Zoinks!"Here are my television viewing recommendations for the week of February 21st.
