ABC Hopes for Millions of Viewers Again With New Millionaire

THE MILLIONAIRE RETURNS
ABC literally made millions on THE MILLIONAIRE, the prim-time gameshow hosted by Regis Philbin. ABC plans all new episodes of the mega-popular series during the important November ratings "sweeps" month. The series will air almost every night of the week at a variety of different timeslots. Said ABC Entertainment co-Chairman Stu Bloomberg, "We've captured lightning in a bottle with this show, and we intend to take full advantage of it."

Another Veteran Performer Passes Away
Stage, screen and television star George C. Scott passed away this past week at his home in Westlake Village, California. The noted thespian was 71 years old.

Though best known for his 1970 Oscar-winning performance as General George Patton, Scott starred in numerous notable television programs. Among the television programs he appeared in were THE CRUCIBLE by Arthur Miller in 1967, OLIVER TWIST and A CHRISTMAS CAROL, both noted works by Charles Dickens.

Most recently Scott earned an Emmy-Award for the television version of 12 ANGRY MEN which appeared on SHOWTIME last season. His directorial work includes one of my favorite programs of all time, THE ANDERSONVILLE TRIAL, a two-part tv movie airing on ABC in 1970. Scott is survived by six children, including director/actor Campbell Scott.

ONCE AND AGAIN Airs Again
ABC has entered into an agreement with the LIFETIME Cable Network to air episodes of their new series ONCE AND AGAIN three days after they first air on ABC. This is a growing trend in the broadcast industry as the mega-media corporations try to feed programming to their various broadcast and cable networks. (ABC and LIFETIME are both owned by Disney, which also produces the series.)

My television viewing recommendations for the week.
In honor of the beginning of premier week my television viewing recommendations will concentrate on network series and season premieres. Here we go:

Saturday, September 18th
FREAKS AND GEEKS, NBC, 8:00 - 9:00 p.m., PST
This series is supposed to look at high school as it was for most of us - an uncomfortable and confusing time which sometimes could be very cruel. Most critics say this is one of the most promising new series of the season.

THE PRETENDER, NBC, 9:00 - 10:00 p.m., PST
As the fourth season begins, Jarrod is prisoner at The Centre.

Sunday, September 19th
TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL, CBS, 8:00 - 9:00 p.m., PST
The season premier offers a powerful story about a young boy trying to fight slavery in modern-day Sudan and the problems he creates for his U.S. Senator mom.
