Another Old Series Is Headed For The Big Screen

News and Notes from the world of television:

By Your Command: Fans of the short-lived 1978 ABC series BATTLESTAR GALACTICA have reason to celebrate. According to the Rueters news service, a $40-million dollar feature film version is on the way. It will reportedly update the series and is scheduled to begin filming in Luxemburg, Germany this coming September.

The film will be produced by series creator Glen A. Larson (THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN and KNIGHT RIDER). Mike Finch, who wrote several drafts of the script for the newly released WING COMMANDER, will write the script.

According to news reports, the film will follow Commander Cain¹s attempts to locate the missing battlestar. The episodes of the series featuring Commander Cain (who was played by the late Lloyd Bridges) are among the best and most popular episodes of the series.

Snyder says good night to late night: Tom Snyder is getting ready to turn out the lights on his successful late night CBS series. Several big name guests including Alec Baldwin, Dennis Miller and Roger Ebert are scheduled to help send the series off in high fashion.

Speaking personally, I¹m going to miss Snyder. I first began watching him on the classic TOMORROW series which ran on NBC from 1973 to 1982. There was many a time when I barely woke up in time for school because I had spent the wee hours of the morning watching Snyder do his thing. Snyder was a presence on late night television long before David Letterman or Conan O¹Brien and he will be missed.

Mafia series is "a hit": The wonderful HBO series THE SOPRANOS is coming to the end of its first season. The first part of a three-hour season finale begins on Sunday. Rumor has it that not all the characters will return next season. Fans and critics alike are in love with this series. I recommend that you give it a try.

Sci-Fi series are flying high: The Sci-Fi Channel is now airing several first-run episodes from various science fiction series. The out of this world programming starts with POLTERGEIST: THE LEGACY and is followed by FARSCAPE, SLIDERS and FIRST WAVE. FARSCAPE is produced by The Jim Henson Company and Hallmark Entertainment. The programs are also simulcast on the Sci-Fi Channel¹s website. For more information, check out their website at http://www.sci-fi.com

This week in tv history: THE OUTSIDERS premieres on Fox. The series is based on the book by S.E. Hinton and is produced by Francis Ford Coppola, who also produced the theatrical version of the book as well. The series followed the exploits of three orphaned boys living in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1966. The show lasted until August 26, 1990.
