Summer used to mean viewers only got to see reruns and failed TV pilots. No longer. Thanks to the competition from cable and satellite TV, even the broadcast networks are premiering new programming in the summer. Here is a rundown of some of the programs available this summer, with some sports thrown in for good measure.
Sports Weekend of August 5th: The X-Games are moving closer to the mainstream of the sports world. These games, which feature many competitors in their teens, feature skateboarding and BMX and Motocross racing among others. The games are again being televised by ESPN. For more info, please visit http://expn.go.com/expn/index Saturday, August 6th: The NFL Hall of Fame induction ceremonies take place in Canton, Ohio, the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This year's inductees are All pro quarterbacks Steve Young from the San Francisco 49ers, League MVP quarterback Dan Marino from the Miami Dophins, Fritz Pollard, a quarterback coach from the 1920s and Benny Friedman, a quarterback from the 1920s and 30s. As a lifelong Miami Dolphin fan, you know I'll be watching. The coverage begins at 1 p.m. EST on ESPN. For complete details on their coverage, visit http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/feature/fe... Monday, August 8th The Annual Hall of Fame Game features The Miami Dolphins vs. the Chicago Bears. The game will be presented on ABC by the "Monday Night Football" crew. This should be interesting as Monday Night Football is moving to ESPN after the 2005 season. Al Michaels will then call the games with Joe Theisman when the games move to ESPN. John Madden has already signed a contract to move to NBC for their new Sunday Night football package. At least we get to enjoy Madden and Michaels together for this season. Summer Series Programming ABC Family is airing a new family drama entitled, "Wildfire." The series is set on a horse ranch. It tells the story of a young woman who gets a job at the ranch after being released from a juvenile detention facility. The adults are played by "Deep Space Nine" alumnus Nana Visitor and "McCloud" and "Gunsmoke" star Dennis Weaver. For more info, visit http://abcfamily.go.com/wildfire/index.h... The WB returns "Summerland," the surprise hit family drama from last season starring Lori Loughlin ("Full House.") The series was co-created by Loughlin and is produced by Aaron Spelling productions. Think of it as "7th Heaven" with a bit more edge. For more info, visit http://www.thewb.com/Shows/Show/0,7353,|... The so-called "defective detective," Adrian Monk, is back with all new episodes. The series is one of the highest rated shows on basic cable and registered over five million viewers on its debut this season. Emmy nominated actor Tony Shalub has made "Monk" the most popular TV detective since Peter Falk's beloved "Columbo." The series airs Friday evenings on USA.
