Television gives fans a chance to catch Major League Baseball

Major League Baseball is probably best suited to radio and the likes of legendary broadcasters such as Vin Scully and the late Mel Allen and Red Barber. Even so, baseball is great on television as well.

Nowadays, the choices for a baseball fan are practically endless. Most local teams have deals with regular broadcast stations. MLB also have deals with ESPN and FOX so almost any game featuring a local team is on television, be it home or away. You can also subscribe to MLBTV and watch games over the Internet.

I have a bad case of baseball fever this season so, for the first time ever, I purchased the MLB package from DirecTV. While there are local blackout rules, I can get up to 60 games per week featuring each team in the league. Last night, for example, I switched over the Padres vs. Pirates extra-inning game once the Dodger game had ended. Quite a change from the days when I was a kid and seeing games on TV was a rarity - this was in the days before cable and satellite TV, of course.

ABC's Jennings has cancer: ABC News anchor Peter Jennings has been diagnosed with lung cancer. He informed staff members in an e-mail last week and plans to continue anchoring as much as he can while he undergoes treatment. It is expected he will miss several broadcasts during his lengthy treatment, however. We here at the Suite101 Television Column wish him well and hope for a speedy recovery.
