News and Notes from the world of television....

...Major League Baseball takes center stage this week. As of this writing, the American and National League Championship playoffs were still continuing. If games five, six and seven are needed in either series, expect NBC (who is carrying the American League series) and FOX (who is carrying the National League series) to preempt their regularly scheduled programming. FOX will carry the World Series which begins on Saturday, October 17...

...The fall television season has barely begun but we already have our first casualty. FOX has canceled their sitcom COSTELLO. It has its last outing on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. (pending possible preemption for the baseball playoffs). FOX is rumored to also be on the verge of canceling LIVING IN CAPTIVITY and GETTING PERSONAL.

...Fans of classic comedy wanting to check out the original Costello are invited to tune in to reruns of THE ABBOTT AND COSTELLO SHOW on the TV LAND cable network. THE ABBOTT AND COSTELLO SHOW originally ran between 1952 and 1953. Though the writing on the series at times was uneven, the comedy duo managed to include most of their classic vaudeville and movie comedy routines. It is a must-see for fans of classic comedy. The series airs weekdays on the TV LAND network at 4:30 p.m., PST...

NEW SERIES REVIEWS

LEGACY, UPN. Grade: C+ genre: drama. This period drama is set in Kentucky shortly after the Civil War. It tells the story of the Logan family who own a horse ranch and tobacco farm. The music and scenery are pleasant enough but the pilot episode was little more than your average soap opera.

The series is headed by Ned Logan, a widowed father doing his best to raise his family and instill in them a sense of family history and values. It features brotherly rivalry, unrequited love, a doomed romance and the usual assortment of family tragedies features in prime time soap operas.

I think the series stands a better chance of success if the writers contribute more on stories featuring the historical events of the time the drama is set rather than on typical soap opera plots. The series has some potential as there are few period dramas on television today. Time will tell what the producers do with that potential.
