NBC Goes for the Gold with Olympic Coverage

Today NBC begins the Herculean task of broadcasting the Summer Olympic Games from Athens, Greece. The Peacock Network and its network affiliates will provide over 1,200 hours of Olympic coverage and use over 100 commentators. Much of their telecasts will be tape delayed as the live events will end at approximately 1 p.m. PST.

Finding out which event is on when, and on what NBC network, can be a daunting task. NBC has a link on their official Web site to each of their networks offering Olympic coverage. The link features the date, time and event each affiliate is telecasting. USA Network Enjoys Record Ratings: In recent years the USA Network has concentrated on offering original programming during the summer months. Those efforts are paying off handsomely. USA Network had three of the top four original programs on basic cable for the week ending August 1st.

"Monk," the so-called "defective detective," placed No. 2 with 3,664,000 viewers. The sci-fi mini-series "The 4400" was No. 4 with 3,111,000 viewers. "The Dead Zone," based on the Stephen King novel, placed No. 12 with 2,706,000. Look for "The 4400" to be rerun soon as it set record numbers for a cable mini-series. "Star Trek" composer passes away: Noted film and television composer Jerry Goldsmith passed away last month due to complications from cancer. The composer was familiar to "Star Trek" fans through his compositions for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and "Star Trek: Voyager." Among the many theatrical films he scored were "Patton," "Poltergeist," "Planet of the Apes" and "Hoosiers." Our deepest condolences are extended to his family and friends. "Smallville" Heats Up: Michael Ironside and Erica Durance have joined the cast of "Smallville." Ironside plays General Sam Lane, father to Lois Lane. Durance has the pivotal role of a young Lois Lane and will appear for at least 13 episodes this season. This will no doubt provide complications for the relationship between Clark Kent and Lana Lang. Kilborn says "Later" to "Late Late Show Actor, comedian Craig Kilborn has announced that he is leaving his late night talk show. Kilburn, the original host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," and a former anchor at ESPN, is leaving the late night talk show to concentrate on writing and producing. Ratings have improved steadily during his tenure began on "The Late, Late Show" which now averages 1.7 million viewers. No word yet on his replacement.
