Back when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s there was no such thing as cable, satellite TV, DVDs, VCRs, etc. Summer television viewing consisted mostly of reruns or failed television pilots. Not any more.

Facing a continually delining audience, the major broadcast networks are stealing a page from basic cable and introducing a number of new shows this summer. Here are some of the highlights:

FOX: The most aggressive of the broadcast networks, FOX is rolling out six new shows in June.

The Jury is a court room drama starringLevinsonevinson and premieres on June 8th.

The Casino is an intriguing "reality series." Two friends who knew virtually nothing about the world of gambling bought The Golden Nugget Casino. Viewers will get to see their triumphs and mistakes first hand. Premieres June 14th.

The North Shore is a television soap opera. Think "Hotel" set in Hawaii. Premieres June 14th.

The Simple Life 2" is round two of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie in rural America. Premieres June 16th.

Method & Red is a comedy about two young rap stars who move to the suburbs. Premieres June 16th.

Quintuplets stars Andfatherhter as the fater of five 15 year-olds. Premieres June 16th.

CBS Big Brother 5 returns with another group of people cooped up and on camera 24/7. Premieres July 6th.

The Amazing Race 5 The Jerry Bruckheimer reality/race series returns. Premieres July 6th.

NBC Next Action Star features 14 contestants vying for roles in an upcoming film. Premieres June 14.

USA Network The 4400 is a mini-series about 4400 people, long presumed dead, who return to earth, each with their own surprises. Premieres July 18th.

There are several returning series with new episodes this summer as well. These include Schmox Feet Under, Joe Schmo 2 and Nip/Tuck.

Coming next time: A preview of the new fall season on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, UPN and the WB.

Final thoughts: Do you have a television related Web site that you want me to review? Do you have a television trivia question that you want me tockingstonIf so, drop me a line at ckingston@aol.com I'd love to hear from you. Until next time, happy viewing!
