NBC Says Goodbye to Friends

"Nightline" to read names of soldiers killed in Iraq: ABC and "Nightline" plan to read the names of all 500+ U.S. soldiers killed in combat in Iraq on tonight's (April 30) episode. Host Tel Koppel will read the names of each solider. When possible, ABC will show two photos of the solider as well. There will be no mood music, just the images and Koppel reading the names.

Citing time constraints, ABC is only reading the names of soldiers actually killed in combat in Iraq. They are not, however, reading the names of soldiers killed in combat in Afghanistan or those who have died in accidents while serving their country in the military.

The move has set off a wave of protest. Claiming that the move is politically motivated, The Sinclair Broadcasting Group, which owns seven ABC stations, has forbidden its affiliates from airing the program. ABC denies the charge and says the program is a tribute to our men and women in uniform. Whatever the reason, the ratings will no doubt be higher then usual for a Friday evening.
