Super Bowl Half Time Show Overshadows a Great Game

The executives at CBS Sports have to be very frustrated. They had one of the closest and most exciting games in Super Bowl history but all most people want to talk about is the ill-fated half time show and the juvenile humor contained in some of their commercials. The game seems almost secondary, even though it came down to a last second field goal.

I'm not defending CBS, the NFL, MTV or their parent company Viacomm. The executives at CBS and the NFL should have known what they were getting when they hired MTV to produce the half time show. Anyone who has watched MTV, or the MTV Awards, for that matter, knows what types of entertainment MTV puts on for their audience. I think many people were just as offended by the performers grabbing their crotches every chance they got as they were by Ms. Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction."

In the context of a Super Bowl, the "entertainment" during the half time show was in very poor taste. Even parents who routinely screen the programs their children watch wouldn't be expected to feel the need to monitor what went on at the Super Bowl. It was the wrong place, wrong time for that half time show. Even so, this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion.

CBS has announced that the Grammy's will now be under a five minute delay so they can edit out any potential rude behavior by the artists. NBC has deleted a scene in an upcoming episode of "ER" that showed an elderly patients breast. One of the members of Timberlake's former band, N Sync, was scheduled to perform during the halftime at the upcoming Pro Bowl. The NFL has now cancelled his performance. This makes no sense as he was not one of those who participated in the Super Bowl half time. Now the Pro Bowl will feature a "Don Hoish" mixture of Hawaiian music and performers instead. The game takes place in Hawaii and will air on ESPN on Sunday, February 8.

Given current events, this uproar over the exposure of someone's breast befuddles me. We have a presidential primary season underway. Mounting evidence suggests that our president lead us into an unnecessary war. People are losing their jobs and access to affordable health care yet all most people can focus on is Ms. Jackson's right breast. That is more offensive to me than any half time show.
