5. Telecommuting allows one to work without distraction. Only very focused people are able to work anywhere, including at home, without distraction. Working at home avoids the office gossip and other time wasters however, it offers up a new source of distractions namely the television, the refrigerator and children if you attempt to work while they are home. Further, the need to take care of household chores such as paying bills, doing laundry, or running to the bank can take up significantly more time than people expect.

This article is not intended to discourage you from telecommuting. It is intended to help you understand the truth about working at home. Working at home offers many benefits that can include flexible scheduling and decreased childcare but it's not likely to be perfect. The best way to be successful in telecommuting is to enter into such a situation with a full understanding of its shortcomings as well as its perks. The better prepared you are to meet those shortcomings the less discouraged and more successful you will be.
