Get the Job... Market Yourself!

"Most job seekers don't think of themselves as just like a can of peas, but in a way, they are!" says Alison Blackman Dunham, NYC life & career expert, and author of the new book YOU ARE THE PRODUCT-How to Sell Yourself To Employers. This recently published book answers the question: "How can I beat the competition and get the job I really want?"

This is not your ordinary job search book. There is no information on preparing a resume and other typical job search information. Instead, You are the Product focuses on helping the job seeker "package" himself or herself to "sell" to an employer and beat out the competition. While the book focuses on a traditional job search, there is helpful information for those of you looking for a work-at-home job.

One of the key points made in the book has to do with impressions. Do you know what impression you give to a potential employer? Even though you may never see the personnel person in a work-at-home job search, all your written and phone communication will impact the impression a potential employer has of you. Is your e-mail inquiry well thought out and professional? Is your resume slanted to fit the job to which you are applying? Does your cover letter or introduction suggest you are qualified for the job? You Are the Product goes into detail about the importance of the impression you make and how employers make decisions on how you will "fit" into the company based on impressions made about you.

Another point made in the book that applies to work-at-home job searchers is the need to do some research on the company. Work-at-home jobs are competitive. You may have the skills and experience but so too may many others. How can you set yourself apart from the others? Research! By researching the company and subtly using the tidbits of knowledge you gain in your resume, cover letter, and other communications you: 1) show you are resourceful; 2) indicate the level of interest you have in the job is high; and 3) make your application stand out among the other qualified but "cookie-cutter" style resumes.

Even if you already work for a company and you are considering preparing a work-at-home proposal, this book provides great information on how to insure your boss has good impression of you and therefore would consider your proposal.
