Will You Work-At-Home This Year?

Mar 9, 2001 - © Leslie Truex

At the beginning of the year I challenged visitors to the Telecommuting Forum at Suite101 to establish goals and make a plan towards working at home in 2001. Have you done it? Are you doing one thing every day to help you reach your goal?

I have made goals myself and I know how hard it is to work on them. The daily tasks of raising kids, maintaining my business, completing freelance projects, and other life activities often get in the way. For me, scheduling daily activities related to my goal is important. I have taken to using the Task function on my Outlook software to list all the things I want to accomplish overall. I use the priority or date features to help me organize my tasks so that I'm completing them in order of importance. I run this program all the time so it's easy for me to look at my list while I'm working. It has helped me stay on task and work more efficiently. I have discovered that if I forget to turn it on, I can't figure out what do or what order I need to do it.

Even with all my tasks and goals easily accessible, I still find that it's a challenge to work on too many goals or projects at once. This week, I achieved the most success in my business web site. However, I wasn't able to do as much as I had planned in promoting my book or learning more about programming web pages. I use myself as an example to show you that everyone struggles with making time for goals. It is important though that you not let your goals fall to the wayside. They are too important (or should be) for that. The key is to make progress, no matter how little, each day. Also, focus on what you have accomplished not how much more you have to do. A task list is a great way to monitor your progress as you can easily see what you have done by the number of checked off tasks.

So if you haven't already, be sure to schedule time each day to work on your goal. It could be just reading a chapter of a work-at-home book, making a list of work-at-home ideas, visiting one web site to check on new job postings, etc. Include these activities in with your other activities such as paying bills, going to the grocery store, and giving the kids a bath. If it's truly your dream to work at home, then you owe it to yourself to make achieving this goal part of your daily life. Your work-at-home dream won't happen unless you do.
