Think work-at-home jobs are all scams? Today I did a job search and found over a 100 work-at-home job announecments posted on the Internet. While there may be a few scams interspersed, most of these jobs involve web design, computer programming, writing, research, management and recruiting. These jobs are easy to find, if you know where and how to look.

Before you start your work-at-home job search, here are some things you should understand about legitimate telecommuting jobs:

1. Give up the idea that you will be stuffing envelopes or assembling crafts. I haven't met anyone yet who hasn't lost money on this.

2. Never pay money for a job. Employers don't charge to hire you. Anyone saying they need money to set up an account or send you supplies is selling you something. Think about it, you would not pay your current employer to set you up on payroll or give you paperclips. Telecommuting jobs are no different.

3. In your search you will find that technical jobs dominate the telecommuting job market. Consider getting trained in web design, programming or other computer related fields.

4. Treat your work-at-home job search like any other job search. Know your skills and experience. Have a resume prepared.

5. Understand that employers with work-at-home programs are not looking for 'homeworkers'. They are looking for qualified people to fill specific jobs. When looking for employees they advertise these jobs not the location the job will be conducted.

6. Always research the company you are considering applying to. Even if they don't charge you money, you want to be sure you'll get paid.

The best place to search for jobs are on career and job search sites. Here are some tips to using these sites to find telecommuting jobs:

1. To receive full search results, register with the site. Its usually FREE and will get you a complete (vs. a partial) list of results.

2. Search jobs using keyword 'telecommute'.

3. Go through the list and find the jobs suited to your skills and experience. Ignore any that ask for money.

4.Be sure to follow the instructions for applying to the job carefully. You will have only one chance to make a good impression!
