The Phantom Menace is one of George Lucas' biggest films ever. It came out in the Summer of '99, and was one of the biggest hits of the season. It topped the box office for months and raked in millions upon millions in ticket sales. All the merchandise, like the toys and clothes, are another story, but I estimate they raked in a few times that which they made with the movie tickets. While some might argue that it wasn't nearly as good as they thought it would be, others were wishing that you could buy season tickets to it, like at some sports.
In The Phantom Menace, almost all the characters are new. The main characters are Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jar Jar Binks, Princess Amidala, Anakin Skywalker, Boss Nass, C-3PO, R2-D2, Darth Sidius, Darth Maul, and Nute Gunray. Qui-Gon Jinn is the Jedi Master that teaches his apprentice, Kenobi, the ways of the Force. A powerful Jedi, he was chosen by the Jedi Council to handle the delicate situation at Naboo. Obi-Wan Kenobi is a Padawan learner, an apprentice that is experienced in the ways of the Force, but not enough to become a full Jedi Knight. Eager and headstrong, he is always narrowly missing danger, and sometimes has to be rescued by his master. Jar Jar Binks is a light-hearted Gungan from the planet Naboo. An exile from his home city, he is a clumsy being that means well, even though trouble usually finds him fast. Princess Amidala is the ruler of the beautiful planet of Naboo. But, when a convoy of battleships owned by the powerful Trade Federation blockade all ships from coming in or going out, things get pretty hot for the new Queen. Anakin Skywalker is more commonly known as Darth Vader, but that's in later times. In the movie, Anakin is a young Podracer that is sensitive to the Force. Podracing is a sport that no human except Anakin can participate in, because it requires such fast reflexes. The Podracing scene brought in about half of the merchandise cash, and is one of the most popular scenes in the movie. Boss Nass is the big leader of the Gungans, who does not like trouble makers. He also does not like the humans that live on Naboo, so therefore they do not have an alliance. Threepio and Artoo are even in this movie, which takes place quite awhile before the droids meet Luke Skywalker. Threepio is a brand new droid just created by young Anakin Skywalker, and Artoo works on Queen Amidala's royal cruiser. Go To Page: 1 2
