Teen Pregnancy Options

As a teen, my menstrual cycle was always irregular. I would get my period every three months. Having missed the first three months was normal, but another three months was questionable.

I went to my gynecologist and he suggested that I have a pregnancy test. Not me, I thought. Well, I was wrong. I was six months pregnant and didn't even know it. I sat at the office with my mouth hanging open and all I could think of was, now what?

I was clueless about pregnancy and my options. I was so uneducated about pregnancy that I just walked out of the office in a daze. Luckily, a friend came with me that day, which was kind of odd when I think about it. I guess I needed a friend that day and didn't even know it.

You're pregnant...now what? There are several options that you can choose from. These options are in the best interest of the individual. All these alternatives should be discussed with parents or a legal guardian.

1. Abortion: An abortion is when the fetus is removed from the woman's uterus. This kind of procedure is usually done during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. This choice is by far the most controversial. Depending on one's religious belief, this procedure may not be an option. Until 1973, abortion was illegal in most U.S. states. Of course, the procedure was performed, but in an illegal fashion. Consult with your parents first. Call your local Planned Parenthood, research clinics, and become educated with this option. Everyone has a right to do what is in the best interest of themselves. Do what you feel is best for you.

There are several methods of abortion:

A. Vacuum Aspiration - This procedure is done during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The uterus is stretched open and an electric pump removes the fetus. This procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. 90 percent of abortions are of this type.

B. D and E (Dilation and Evacuation) - During the second 12 weeks of pregnancy, a woman is under anesthetic and the procedure takes about 10 to 30 minutes. It is similar to Vacuum Aspiration, but may require additional instruments. The cost can be from $250.00 - $1,000 depending on the number of weeks of pregnancy.

2. Adoption: A lot of women will put their child up for adoption. Not being able to afford the care of a child, a mother will decide to give their child to a family who can provide for their child. This option is influenced by financial reasons. One may not be able to afford to raise a child, or the mother may be very young and in school.
