Hannibal: A Second Serving

The movie industry has been buzzing Hannibal since it's opening date on February 9. The sequel to The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal has nabbed the number one spot in the movie box office, raking in millions during its opening weekend. Hannibal Lecter is definitely back with a bite in this gruesome thriller.

In The Silence of the Lambs, the audience was first introduced to the cunning cannibal, Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). Held in a maximum security prison, he escaped. Ten years later, Hannibal picks up where that film left off. Dr. Lecter is on the prowl again and he's grown quite an appetite. Hannibal is set in Florence, Italy where FBI agent, Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore) is still hot on his trail.

Hailed a classic when The Silence of the Lambs hit theaters almost ten years ago, many critics have deemed Hannibal somewhat of a flop. Tongue in cheek at times, Hannibal is an in-your-face type of film that spurs humor at times but is not meant for the weak in stomach. In other words, if blood and guts make you squeam, this movie will send you into a frenzy.

I recently saw this movie and thought to myself, "What am I getting myself into?" From the blood red opening credits and haunting music, I knew from the beginning I was in for a roller coaster scare.

Hannibal is again playing cat and mouse with FBI agent, Starling, as he steps out of hibernation. Placed back on the FBI's top ten most wanted criminals at the urge of former victim, Mason Verger, Starling is back on his trail. Meanwhile, Dr. Lecter is keeping tabs on his "good old friend," Starling, as he begins to correspond with her. However, while Starling is set on capturing him and sending him back to prison, vengeful millionaire, Mason Verger has other plans.

The relationship between Lecter and Starling is highly intriguing. They fascinate each other and if he wasn't so psychotic, they may actually make a good couple (to think!).

Hannibal is rated R for strong gruesome violence so watch at your own risk. However, Hopkins does deliver a good bite in this beautifully horrific film.
