Book Review: Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince

My daughter and I are huge Harry Potter fans. We have read all six books in the series and I thought it would be interesting to review the newest book in the series. While some reviews of this book have produced spoilers, there are no spoilers in this review.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth novel in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. This story is set during Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

This is a very powerful, unforgettable preparation for the finale. This is the darkest book of any in the series thus far. The strength of this story lies in the development not only of Harry Potter, but also of key characters and J.K. Rowling's depiction of a world at war. (Some reviewers think this is her reflection on the current times.)

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, no character is safe. The elements of good vs. evil and right vs. wrong are put to the test. Friendships become stronger and enemies became fiercer. With each book in the series, J. K. Rowling raises the stakes.

Fans of the Harry Potter books have been readied with books 4 and 5 when popular characters have been killed off and the young students were forced to engage in battle. However, in Book 6, the reader sees that the deadliest of battles are yet to be fought.

In this book, Harry is taken under Dumbledore's wing to help him prepare for his last battle with Lord Voldemort. Under Dumbledore's teaching, Harry examines Lord Voldemort's past in more detail than any of the previous books.

Thrown in the mix are emerging romantic relationships with various students and mountains of homework. Classes are harder, but Harry receives some extraordinary help from the mysterious Half-blood Prince. There is also a new Minister of Magic in this novel and a new Defense against the Dark Arts teacher.

Ready or not, the tremendous, mourningful ending of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will leave fans stunned, sorrowful and anxious, wondering what great and terrible events await Harry and his friends in the final book of this series.

This is an excellent book that I highly recommend. I would recommend this book to ages 9 and up. However, younger readers may have a deep connection with the characters and be unable to understand why one of their beloved characters is no longer alive.
