Shout Down The Moon Book Review

Over the past few months, my daughter collected books from different authors and publishing houses to help stock library shelves at a homeless shelter. She received a generous outpouring of support for this project from many authors, who sent autographed copies of their books. One such author is Lisa Tucker. She is a phenomenal writer and this month I am reviewing her book, Shout Down The Moon.

Shout Down The Moon is a fast paced, exceedingly enjoyable read. The action in this novel flows along, from broken childhood memories through dark times to a promising future, but the action never overwhelms the characters. Lisa Tucker makes you care about the characters of this novel and you end up rooting for them to achieve their dreams.

The main character of Shout Down The Moon is Patty Taylor. The book is told from Patty's viewpoint. Patty is a young, single mother of a two-year old, who is trying to provide a good life for herself and her son. Patty is the lead singer of a band whose members either despise her for being in their band, or completely ignore her because they believe she has no sense for music. Patty loves music and through glimpses of her past, the reader sees how much she depended on music to help her through hard times. Music plays a big part in this story. As Patty's love and deeper understanding of jazz music grows, so does she.

Patty is not happy, traveling from bar to bar, but she knows this is better than her past. She loves her son and will do anything to give him the good life he deserves.

Patty's past - her old true love and the father of her son, Willie - comes back to find her. Rick was in jail for 3 years on drug charges. He comes back to find Patty. He strongly believes that he and Patty's love is forever. What he doesn't perceive is the fact that while he was in prison, Patty built a life for herself and her son, without him. Rick will do anything, go anywhere and risk everything to be with Patty and their son. We get glimpses into their past relationship and see how at age 15, Rick was her saving grace from her alcoholic mom's abuse. However, there were also cruel moments, when his rage showed through, and aimed at her.

When Rick is released from prison, he returns to find Patty. This is the turning point in Patty's life. Up until now, Patty was a survivor, a victim of her past. Rick's return changes Patty. She becomes a fighter to save herself and her son from the obsessive, deadly love of Rick.
