Hyperfocus.....Technology can be a bit of a drawback

Second Plane

The problem with that is - if a person with the ability to hyperfocus gets so focused into something like the World Trade Center attack, it can interfere with their normal everyday lives. They can get so sucked into the drama and the intensity of the moment that it over takes them before they realize it.

Today's technology gives us an overwhelming amount of information instantly. We SAW the attacks on the WTC, 90% as it was unfolding. We saw the immediate aftermath of the plane crashing into the Pentagon. We saw how these attacks affected the people on the ground. The dust on everyone - people running - the blank looks on all of those faces - are images most of us will never be able to forget.

We felt great sadness for those people in the commercial airliners who knew they were going to die. I also felt sadness for those who were able to call their loved ones before they died. Those phone calls will live in their memories for the rest of their lives. I think either way - to receive or not receive a call was hard.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. We have been exposed to many MANY tragic images over the last 4 weeks....well....almost...4 weeks. CNBC, MSNBC, FOXNEWS, and CNN are just a few of the cable channels who continually discuss this situation 24 hours a day. They play the video of the various "high points" of that tragic day, or show images of Bin Laden 24/7. Commericals are playing God Bless the USA - which I think is good, but it also fosters hyperfocusing on the tragedy for some.

All it takes is for people who are subject to hyperfocusing to be aware and give themselves and their brains a break. Don't watch this or listen to it on your car radio every waking moment of your life. Take a break from it! Tune to a radio station that plays music. Tune to a TV station that has programming other than "The New War" for some time during the day. If anything really "BIG" happens - they'll tell ya! Be nice to your brain - so when something big does happen - you won't be burned out.
