My NEXT favorite.... THE SCANNER!

CanoScan Screen
I LOVE my scanner. It takes all the photos that I took over the years and lets me digitize them. If I find something in a magazine that I need for a report - I can scan it, correct it and make it the size that I need. (I'll do correction software NEXT month.)

The scanner I have is a small CanonScan. It's about the size of my lap top so I can take it anywhere. I took it to my aunt's house the past Christmas and scanned old family photos. Some of them dated back to the 1800's. As I get time I am fixing them. (You guessed it - more on that next month) It will be good to have all those family photos on a CD. Then each member of the family, who is willing to part with a minor sum for the hours of work I'm doing, will have a CD of the photos after I have cleaned them, sharpened them, lightened or darkened them. I haven't done all the work, so i have not set my little 'fee' yet. It may get larger as the work goes on.

One of the best uses for my scanner is putting illustrations in documents. The scanner software usually lets you do some photo editing while you scan.

I can also do enlargements with my scanner and a photo printer. I can use regular paper, or if I want my enlargement to look like a print I had made, I use photo paper. Make sure to set your printer settings on the proper type of paper. I found out the hard way it does make a difference.

After you get your scanner there are a few simple things to consider before you becaome a 'scanning expert', or Scan QUEEN, as I like to call it.

Most scanners have all the variations I will be talking about. Refer to your scanner manual for exact instructions if this does not fit your scanner.

When I first open up the CanoScan software I have to select that I am going to open my images from my scanner. After the first time I did this, I did not ahve to re-select the kind of scanner I have, but I did have to do that the first time. I always select the 'open photo' option. I want to see what I am scanning, and I don't usually have a 'collection' within the Canon software. When the 'scan gear' comes up I have several options I have to choose. My parents have an HP scanner, and theirs had similar options.
