With the holiday season just around the corner, I'm checking out my kids' list of gifts they hope to receive this year. The top picks are mostly high-tech gadgets consisting of electronic games and computer software among the other usual requests for Christmas. Technology is a great choice when considering what to purchase, as there are selections sure to please young and old alike.
Many will do their shopping in the traditional manner at the malls while others will choose the convenience of online shopping. According to a report by Jupiter Communications, approximately 6 million consumers will use the Internet for online holiday shopping for the first time, and it is predicted that experienced online shoppers will be spending a bigger portion of their holiday money over the Internet. This year's market boasts technological gifts that come in all shapes and sizes. Here are some terrific, educational technology choices for the kids on your list. INTELL-TABLE: The Intelli-Table by Fisher-Price is a joint effort with Microsoft technology and is designed to help develop three different age levels--infant, toddler, and preschooler. The table features three learning rings. This toy presents ABC's, numbers, animal names, and sounds at the first level; different music styles and 30 children's favorites, while also allowing children to create their own originals at the second level; and a games levels which teaches association, creativity, eye-hand coordination, counting, and memory skills, among others. LITTLE SMART SERIES: The Little Smart First Steps Plus Electronic Learning Game and Little Smart Learning Center, both by V-Tech, provide learning experiences in visual, auditory, and tactile learning styles providing exposure to numbers, colors, shapes, and animals. TELEPHONICS: This Leap Frog creation is designed like a telephone and provides experiences with letters of the alphabets and the sounds of each letter. It contains push buttons for the 26 letters. LEAP PAD: Interactive is the key word with this Leap Frog product. The book comes with a pen selector that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can listen to the story read or point to individual words in the story to hear them pronounced or touch a picture and hear the accompanying sound effect. Different slide in books can be purchased for this product. JUMP START SOFTWARE SERIES: This line of software designed by Knowledge Adventure is a top choice for educational computer software. The series ranges from infants and toddlers to sixth grade. Other software titles from this company include "Jump Start Spanish" and "Jump Start Typing."
