Recently, I performed in a community theatre production of Farewell, Farewell, Eugene. The play is a delightful comedy set back in the early 1900's. In one scene, two of the main characters play a card game called "Authors." After seeing this scene enacted many times, I started to wonder if this game really did exist. If so, I thought that the game would make a terrific review tool for my literature final. So, I researched the game on line and found that "Authors" was indeed a real game that held popularity in America for over 130 years.
The game is played similarly to "Go Fish" except with cards with pictures of authors and their works on the cards. Players must collect "books." The player with the most "books" of cards [4 cards of one kind] wins. Today, modern versions of the legendary game can be obtained from specialty educational product merchandisers. One such company, U.S. Games, Inc. offers the gamecards for the modest price of $5.00. Three varieties are available: the traditional "Authors" card game, American Authors, American Women Authors, Children's Authors, Nursery Rhymes. There are also versions for history [inventors] and science. Well, while I was on the topic of educational games that can be used to enhance learning in junior and senior high school language classrooms, I decided to look into what's hot on the educational merchandise market for trendy teachers this fall. Here's what I've uncovered: Smarterkids.com's Educational Games for Jr. High Students Writing Guides and Games for Jr. High Students Fun With Idioms Playing Cards Game: Twenty-five Words or Less Software: Creative Writer2 for Win.
