do. Next week, I want discuss some ways to incorporate pieces
like “The Last Confession” into the classroom, because you
will see automatically when you go to IFILM that we run into some
immediate problems, even when we teach on a college level. Much
of IFILM is erotica, and there is no way to avoid contact with this
genre when we suggest films like Pryce’s, even though her film
is certainly not part of that genre. This is not my opportunity
to rave against the erotic, but since sex sells so well, we can’t
just direct our students to IFILM because of the constant exposure.
But along with this association, “The Last Confession” adds
elements of the religious taboo even though the piece is not in any
way teaching religion. Still, I’m determined to find a way
around these problems because, though we may be a link in Pryce’s
view, I think her film is a link as well. They will watch a
video; what would happen if they watched a video worth watching?
A film that includes the audience in the ritual of story telling and
miracle sharing? A true performing art?
Finally, Pryce says this about having her film on the Internet: “I simply cannot believe that my film has been viewed thousands of times; I am so fortunate. It is absolutely thrilling and profoundly rewarding.” With this I say, please see the film. This is what she says about making the film, but it could also describe how I felt the first time I saw it (and the second and third for that matter). If you know of a film this good on the Internet, please share it in the discussion list, or if you have some way of teaching this film without getting fired, please share that as well. Until we can figure that out, at least see it for yourself, and as always, let me know what you think.
