James: No, and I hope it makes you feel better to come home and prove you're smarter
than your high school brother after failing out of college.
Alesha: I didn't fail out. I'm taking some time off to do some research.
James: Taking time off from college to do some research. I get it. Have you seen Mom?
Alesha: I'm working with Doctor Fugasi on a project with the enterprise district.
James: How much are you making? I bet you're making more than I do around here.
Alesha: Around where?
James: Here, working for Mama. I don't how she pays me at all. People just come in
here, order coffee, don't want to eat. They just want to sit around talking about history and
junk. They just meet here. If they ain't gonna order, we ought to at least charge them rent
for sitting up in here so long.
Alesha
History and junk?
James
How much money can history make you?
Alesha
I don't know. I haven't tried to sell mine out.
James
I'll find her myself.
Alesha
She's probably out getting supplies. We had a pretty good breakfast crowd in here talking
about history and junk.
James

Listen, I got a job.
Alesha
And Mama says you do it well.
James
No I mean, I went out this morning and got a real job.
Alesha
And what constitutes a real job.
James
I ain't no constitute.
Alesha
What makes this new job a "real job"?
James
I got a job with the tourist industry. See, you spent your school time learning history and
junk; I learned to make money.
Alesha
Tourist industry, huh. Wow! You mean you're working south of Calhoun Street.
James
Right.
Alesha
Where the real jobs are.
James
Right.
Alesha
Well I thank you for teaching me what a real job is. Real job means you're working for
white people. Congratulations.
James
It's a real job because I'm not working for Mama. I'm getting out of the house to work.
And what's so bad about working for white people? Their money's green, ain't it?
Alesha
You'll make a good constitute.
James
What?
Alesha: Nothing is wrong with it, usually. When I get certified, if a white man hires me, I'll
work for him just as I would for anybody else. But haven't you noticed something about
this town? The whole reason Mama set up this restaurant was so black people or any
people qualified could work in a Charleston restaurant. What happens when blacks go
