Dominique: So you left everyone's favorite restaurant to shovel horse mess—?

James: Mule mess.

Dominique: Well that makes it a lot better. –to shovel mule mess for less money—?

James: Almost no money.

Dominique: And if sense were dollars, you'd still be broke.

James: I didn't go down there for the money.

Dominique: You didn't take the job for the money. You're losing me.

James: All right. It was a bad idea. I said that.

Dominique: So you're workin' with your mama again.

James: For now. She won't let me work when school starts again.

Dominique: So you gotta go to court?

James: No. I just had to sign something saying I wouldn't press charges on them. Dominique: So you're gonna listen to Mrs. Lance—? So you're gonna listen to your mama now?

James: It ain't about all that. I did what I set out to do.

Dominique: You mean you set out to get bashed over the head or just you set out to shovel horse—?

James: Mule.

Dominique: Whatever.

James: I'm seventeen. I wanted to prove that I'm my own man and I did.

Dominique: How you figure you did that?

James: Look, it's like I told Mama. . . .

[Lights rise on the cafe as lights fade on Dominique and James. James walks to stage left of one of the tables with his book in hand.] Scene 2 At Rise: The New Charleston Renaissance Cafe. Some tables with red and white table cloths and four wooden chairs each sit down stage. A backdrop painted as a small restaurant has confined the action to far downstage. The sounds of Duke Ellington are heard as if coming from the kitchen. Alesha sits at the café table working on a charcoal drawing. James carries a book as he enters seemingly unnoticed by Alesha. He looks over her shoulder at the drawing. James: That boy looks a little young for you. Alesha: What boy? James: The one you're drawing. Alesha: This is what he looked like in 1933. I suppose he would be much older now. It's Eugene Williams, but I wouldn't expect you to know who that was. James: How am I supposed to keep up with all of our family? We got family everywhere. Alesha: Family?

James: He ain't family?

Alesha: Eugene Williams was one of the Scottsboro Boys. James: Oh. Oh yeah. Have you seen Mom? Alesha: You don't even know who that is, do you? James: Mom. Yeah, she's the other nagging woman around here, the one who owns the place. Alesha: I mean, you don't know who the Scottsboro Boys are, do you?
