In many ways, Stanislavski, Meyerhold, and Meisner have returned parts of the ritual to theatre. For so many years, our craft did not know how to break character (personality and self) down to its elements, which include circumstances and objectives. We know how to do this, now, as actors and as audience, and if we can focus and step out of the center of our universe, we can step momentarily into another self. Of course, we eventually have to come back to the self we practice everyday, but like the artist in Wine in the Wilderness , we return with our perspectives a little altered, a vision a little deeper and wider, our minds a little more open, and our hearts a little more tuned for having communicated, either as sender or as receiver, with others who now share with us a common and new tradition.
