Web Sites For Kids

© Cheryl Lewis

In previous articles we've talked about some of the different areas of the Web that kids should know; Email and Kids, How To Search The Web, Children Online they need some fun places to start out. I've been doing some looking around and these are some of the sites that I think would be great places for them to start with.

One of the first places I would start with is Kids Click!. This site is actually a search site created by librarians. They have over 600 different sites that can be accessed by browsing the categories or alphabetically. I thought the categories were broken down really well for kids. Each category has several different subtopics and then several different sites in each subtopic. They also offer a large range of sites for different age groups. I came across sites for Preschoolers up to Teenagers.

This would be a great site to find help with homework and research projects. I also really liked the picture and sound search tools too. This offers graphics and sounds that are suitable for kids for downloading. What a great way to spice up a school report.

One of my kids favorite sites on the web is Nickelodeon. This site is so full of stuff for kids I don't think they could do it all in the two hour limit my kids have. The sites are usually interactive and have great sound effects. I will warn parents though, you may find yourself wandering around singing "Nick, Nick, Nick - Nickelodeon" for a couple of hours after listening to it though. They have games, sites about some of the different shows on the cable station, music and a "blab" area. Even though this site is about kids and for kids it is still one to keep an eye. We've never come across anything that I felt was inappropiate for my older kids but not suitable for my four year old.

Now for the four year old there is Nick Jr.. Ok I admit that this is one site I could spend quite a bit of time. I really enjoy this site. They have tons of stuff for little ones, like printable pictures of the different show characters, e-cards and loads of games. They also have some great stuff for the parents. I love their recipes. I have never gotten a recipe off of Nick Jr.com that my kids didn't scarf right up. They also have a party area to help parents plan theme parties. Need a Bob the Builder cake without spending a fortune? They have it in the Party area at Nick Jr.com.
