Astronomy For Kids - A Web Site Review

One of the greatest things about the Internet is the wealth of information available. While not all of it is suitable for kids there are tons and tons of sites that focus on kids and what interests them. I came across this site and as I was reading the front page I read the sentence "Adults are welcome to join us as long as they behave." I loved that and so did my daughter. It lets you know right off the top that these folks are sharing their knowledge and aiming it right to young people.

The second page I ventured into was the Planets page. It has a listing of all the planets with a short description and a small picture. They have also given a link for each planet giving all the information available about each one. You can also get an enlarged picture of each planet. This is perfect for doing reports or Science homework.

They also have Sky Maps. It is updated monthly as near as I can tell and they give details for each planet and what you can expect to see or not see for the month. It gives dates on which you can look for the planets. It gives the dates on which you can keep track of the moon. I also really like the maps they have at the bottom of the page that will make it easier to get an idea of where to look in the sky for the planets. They also offer a printable version of the maps.

They have a puzzles page too. It's actually three different word search puzzles that can be printed out. The really neat part is that they don't give you the words to find, they just give you clues. You can find all the answers to the clues on the web site. So not only do you work a puzzle but you learn something.

There is another page for Sky Facts. They have several interesting facts. Do you know what a Red Shift is, or why it's important? How about what causes the peaks on craters? The answers are right there for you to find.

Do you know someone who is interested in the planets and solar system? Send them a postcard from Astronomy for Kids. They have a small selection of nice looking postcards. Just enter the information right there on the site and off it goes.
