Microsoft Word Beginning Lessons - Lesson 5 Using The Tool Bar

Microsoft Word has a nifty little thing called the toolbar that kids can use with just a click of a button to make their documents more interesting and fun. For this lesson I'm really only going to talk about the basic buttons to show them. With my kids I have found showing them to much before I'm ready to sit down and help them undo and redo what they have done is basically a pain in the neck.

In the previous lessons I have recommended that you have them type the instructions you are giving them as a document in Word as you go along. If you have done this go ahead and have them open it up so you can add to it. If you haven't done this you can start now.

Since you have shown them the menu bar and the nifty little things it can do now is the time to show them the tool bar a little more in depth. Start with the Format functions available in the tool bar. The New Blank Document, Open a Document, Save, Print and Print Preview. I also have an email icon in mine but I have never shown them that one because the next email I type in my word program might come out with Mean Mommy @ ....,... and who knows what else. I just told them do not mess with that button-it's for Mommy's work. They of course smiled like little Angels and said "OK". (I still try to remember to check it :))

With the buttons I have mentioned just run the mouse over the button and explain in as much detail as you can remember what they are for and where they have already found them in the menu bar.

Next show them the Font style and Font size. I would click on the Font style and show them that the pull down menu will open and it should show what each style will look like using the description name. Remember to tell them where they have already seen this function. (Format in the menu bar.)

Show them the Bold and the Underline and the Italic buttons. Explain that when they want to make something bold, underlined or italic they need to click the button before they start typing whatever is to be bolded, etc. Once they are finished with typing whatever needs to be bolded, underlined or italics they will need to turn the button off again. If they have already typed something and decide they want it to be bold have them go back and highlight it and then click bold.
