Cut the Crap and Pay Attention!

Lately I've been hearing a great deal about kids and the net. Not all of it has been good. That's truly sad too. The net can be such a wonderful place, full of information and wonder. It's unfortunate that there are so many people out there who recognize the wide, wild and what some would call 'sickening' possibilities and take full advantage of it.

I understand that old cliché` "to each his own". Hey, if you're 18 years old and want to view porn or who knows what else, who am I to gripe about it? Well, let me tell you who "I" am.

I am a mother. A mother who wants her children safe on the Internet. A mother who doesn't want a pedophile coming after my children. A mother who doesn't want my children's innocence destroyed by some idiot wanting to publish adult sex in full graphic color, not to mention some of the other smut put out there.

I am also a mother who doesn't some fool headed pain in the butt publishing "how to make bombs" for the kid in my son's class who hates everyone and would like nothing better than to see them all hurt or worse.

I'm also the mother trying desperately to keep my home safe from the burglars who keep terrorizing my family. I'm the one who doesn't want some criminal sitting in jail throwing out those articles on "How to Avoid Getting Caught As a Burglar". You might also consider that jail is not supposed to be fun and therefore maybe free Internet service shouldn't be an advantage for those who commit crimes. Well gee, we've been robbed three times in the last month and they've gotten over $800, not including the 'items' they've taken. Once they're caught, they'll be the one putting out the how-to articles for up and coming burglars. Isn't that a comforting thought for those who live in my neighborhood?

But we're not just talking about my neighborhood are we? No, we're talking about an even bigger neighborhood - the world. This is your neighborhood too. How well do you know your neighbors? How well do you know the kids in your child's school? More importantly, how well do you know, really know, what your child is doing on the Internet.

Think about that. Really think about it. What rules have you set up? How are you enforcing those rules? Do you have nanny software? Do you have your profiles done differently? Are your kids allowed to download programs, open strange emails, get adult oriented material?
