Political Cartoonist

Explain what controversy means, and that so many political cartoons focus on controversial issues specifically because people have such strong and differing ideas about the issue.

4. Allow students to work with a newspaper or online to find a political issue that they feel strongly about. They should prepare a paper that contains at least 5 pros and 5 cons related to the issue, and a short one-paragraph summary of the issue itself.

5. For the creation of their cartoons, students should go through a two-step process; one, a rough draft that contains a "blueprint" for their cartoon. Guide the students through this process, helping them integrate at least 2 of their pro/con sentiments about the issue they've chosen into the cartoon. Their next step is the final draft, which should be created in pen-ink on posterboard paper.

Use the Student Print-Outs below to guide the teams in what is expected of them, what they will be learning, and how they will be graded.

Are you old enough to vote? Are you registered?

Are you pro-life or pro-choice? What are you basing your decision on?

Do you feel that women around the world should have access to birth control?

How old should a student be when they start sex education?

Did you have any such program available at your school?

Who do you talk to about issues related to sex? Friends? Family members? Teachers?
