A Writer's Tasks


that you like, you'll be happier about writing in it every day. And you must write in it every day. Your writing doesn't have to be much, or even original, but it does have to be every day.

EXAMPLE:

I went by my old school today. There were students outside, walking around and talking. It must have been lunch hour. I couldn't believe how young they looked, or that I used to be one of them. I still remember the feel of those small, hard seats bolted to a desk, and the little racks that someone would put their muddy feet on so that it was always dirty.

EXAMPLE:
Allen, the boss, lets you know he's boss. He notices if you're two minutes late from break, or if you're talking to a customer about anything not specifically store-related he's there accusing you of being a terrible salesman. He's driven, a hard-worker, but has this narrow-minded view of business that eliminates the customer and focuses on the money in their pocket.

Freewriting

In skateboarding, there's a term called "freestyle"- a type of skating that isn't guided by rules. The skater can do whatever he wants to do, in whatever order he wants to do it, and it's perfectly fine.

In writing, there's the term "freewriting"- a type of writing that isn't guided by rules. You can pick a number of minutes- say five minutes - and just start writing away. You don't pick up your pen or pause for a single second, just keep writing the first thing that pops into your mind.

You can even freewrite in your journal if you aren't inspired to write anything else in it, and you'll be surprised as you read through it later on at what you come up with when you're not trying so hard.

EXAMPLE:

The kid was screaming over a sucker. Just a sucker- not a toy, or anything expensive, just a sucker sitting in the aisle. I think they put stuff right there in the aisle just so that they can catch kids' eyes. Perfect marketing, right on a kid's level. Marketing people must have kids themselves, or they must study them.
