Do you tat with just thread?

© Paulette Dal Porto

I know for some people that may sound like a strange question, but let's just think and see some of the possibilities!

In December, Lisa Trumble put a new pattern of the month on her web site http://www.thisntat.com about tatting with buttons. Darling little pattern which would look great as appliques on a sweatshirt.(I love dressing up sweatshirts, which I personally think were made by angels!) Check out her pattern at http://www.thisntat.com/medallions/butto...

You can also tat with beads and there are some really pretty ideas out there. In fact, in a Bead and Button magazine, there is an entire article devoted to tatting with beads. In fact, please check out Rina Stepnaya's website at http://members.tripod.com/Ankars/main_e.... to see some beautiful tatting done with beads.

What about socks? Especially for new baby girls. Tat a soft pink edging right on to the edge of baby socks. Or for that matter even big girls would like that.

And there of course are the old favorites such as handkerchiefs. Tatting on linen is very traditional, and tatting a delicate edging in a white silk thread, on a linen handkerchief would be a great gift for a bride. Or tat the edging in a soft blue for that "something blue". For handkerchiefs to tat on go to Hanky Blanks at http://www.hankyblanks.com.

How about a linen collar for a blouse? For those of you who sew, this would make a great project. For some wonderful inspiration go to http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meado...

How about tatting on a christmas ornament? These are very beautiful, and would look wonderful on a Victorian decorated tree. Check out this website http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch... by Pat Greninger.

Or how about making some notecards? Just run over to your local art supply store or Michaels and pick up some blank cards, and tat some flowers to put on the cards, take a fine green marker and add some leaves and a stem, and presto chango, a lovely greeting card. For inspiration, check out Julie Felzien's site at http://www.themadtatter.com.

Well, I'm sure I could come up with quite a few more props for tatting, but these should get your creative juices flowing. I hope you have fun with these ideas.

I have tried tatting on bracelets and with beads. The results can be found in my Tattysaurus on the following page. I give my patterns away, but like to hear from other tatters who try them.
