Water in the Garden

THE GARDEN POND

A garden without water is a little like a beautiful woman without animination in her face - all the beauty is there but the viewer feels that the face would mean so much more with a moving scene No matter how big or small your garden is, there is always room for a water feature. Even if you only have a balcony, it is possible to take a simple bowl, fill with water, throw in some flower petals and voila, you have a mini water garden. One of the driving forces behind my wish to create another garden, was to build a larger water feature than the small pond my daughter built for me on the first day of her holidays in the Town Garden. Hence, "Big Pond, Cinderella" and the "Three Ugly Sisters" crept into our country garden and country life.

I would like you to go to my Home Page now and read the adventures we experienced in creating this water feature at "Kibbenjelok". This is the URL, telling of the trials and tribulations but please do not be put off adding a water feature to your own garden. Come back and I will bring the story into the 21st Century and show you some more recent photos.

There, did you enjoy the saga? There has been much water under the bridge since the day I wrote that chapter and I would like to tell you the continuing story

After the "Big Pond" was filled and we had patted ourselves on the back for some weeks, I noticed that the steepest bank was beginning to crack and leak water. We drained the pond, got the dam builder back and he dug a second hole to pack more clay into the crumbling bank. And we paid again for the machine to come and the wages of the driver. This patching only had a very short life and one day, we saw the same tell tale signs again, the bank was realy cracking up!. We drained the pond, got the dam [n] builder back and he dug a third hole and we paid for the machine and the wages of the driver etc. For this third attempt, I was unable to go to the country to supervise the mending of the bank. I had a prior engagement on the only date they said they could spare the machine, I learnt later that there were two more jobs that were done in Middleton that day, using the same machine. However, as I had carefully shown Kees where I wanted the third water hole to go, I was not too worried. I had placed it in an exact spot, hoping it would link the rest of the six-acre ornamental garden to the water gardens and thus, make a silk purse from a sow's ear
