It is also traditional to deck the table with bowls of cherries, raspberries and strawberries. The warm weather ripens these fruits in time for Christmas day and those cooks, sensible enough to decide it is too hot to cook turkey, chicken, ham, goose or ducks may decide to serve our abundant fish [oysters, lobsters, prawns, abalone, mussels, salmon etc. etc.] and salad. The many varieties of lettuce and Asiatic vegetables make interesting salads and have just grown enough in our veggie gardens. Many folk in the hotter states of Australia have turned to the B.B.Q. Fish, caught early morning and wrapped in silver paper, garnished with butter, lemon and salt and pepper, are quite delicious cooked on a B.B.Q. with a few gum leaves thrown into the coals. If our temperature reaches the high C20s, I sometimes wish I was not such a traditionalist! Christmas time is gift time too and it is possible to buy that special plant from a favourite nursery. What better present to give our best friend or loved one? Every time they see the plant growing healthy and strong in their garden, they will think of you. I personally prefer to plant in Autumn time and, if delighted by such a kind gift, keep the plant in its pot until the cooler weather when the soil is still warm from the summer months and then the roots will be tickled pink with their new environs. As for those most important people at Christmas time, that is the children in an Australia family, what better time to receive the surf board, the bike or the new bathers? But what is Christmas really all about? Is it not the time for families to get together? To feel our love refreshed? One hears of family rows that happen at Christmas time and how sorry I feel for the lonely ones and those unfortunate to be away from their loved ones. I hope that we lucky ones will extend the warmth and happiness we feel to those who have no homes, no gardens in which to find comfort and no money for fancy food. May peace come to the whole of Mankind in 2005 Did you get some great presents? Leave the washing up and take a peep at our garden flowers. Remember, these pages are graphic heavy.
