Ready for more of the place names of Tasmania? Great! First, we'll look at the names that sound as if they are animal and bird-related; there are sure to be quite a few. The birds seem especially well-represented, for some reason.
Let's see now... how about Antill Ponds? That's down in the lower midlands. Golden Fleece Rivulet has already been mentioned as a classical sounding name, but it certainly qualifies as an animal too. And what about Crayfish Creek? Buckland sounds as if it relates to deer, while Crabtree, Cowrie Point, Couta Rocks and Bream Creek are distinctly fishy. Glebe, Cygnet, Cuckoo, Swansea, Swan Bay, Swan Point, Swanston and Little Swanport all sound very birdish. So do Emu Heights, Penguin, Ravensdale, Ravenswood, Eaglehawk Neck, Shearwater, Little Peacock and Big Peacock. Dairy Plains relates to cows, and then there's the sea-flavoured Dolphin Sands, and Shark Point, Oyster Bay, Oyster Cove, Musselboro and Musselroe Bay. Badger Head, Molesworth and Mole Creek are a bit of a shock, since Tasmania has never seen a badger or a mole in its life, but we have plenty of possums to account for Opossum Bay. Snake Gully is a rare reptilian connection. And then there's Dromedary... Let's turn from creatures to personal names! These abound as well. There's Maria Island, and Sarah Island, Alanvale and Allens Rivulet. Apollo Bay, (which should be with the classics)Arthur River, Arthurs Lake, Abels Bay, Beulah, Bronte Park, Bradys Lake, Brooklyn, Brooks Bay, and Brookville. Ben Lomond sounds like a personal name, though it's Scottish for Mountain, while Mangana is a name you mightn't know. Linda, Leslie Vale, and Lalla might be more familiar, and how about Kelvin Grove, Lake Margaret and Marion Bay? Then there's Marylands, Mathinna, Oonah, Port Arthur, Port Davey and even Camena, (though the person I met was named *after* the place!) Charlotte Cove and Claremont, Clarence Point, Clarendon, Claude Road, Cleveland, Clifton Beach, and Clifton Vale sound rather upper class, then there's Austins Ferry and Danbury Park. Next come Cressy and Davis, Don, Dee and Douglas River, Edith Creek, Elizabeth Town, Ellendale, Elliott, Frankford, Franklin and George Town. And how about Wilburville, Williamsford, Nellys Gully, Ross, Roland, Randalls Bay, Rosetta, Rossarden and Shannon? Not to mention St Helens, St Leonards, St Marys, St Peters Pass, Henrietta, Alberton, Royal George and Stanley! No doubt there are more, but that's enough of that! Let's turn to food with Oyster Bay and Oyster Cove sounding very tasty. Breadalbane sounds as if it should be a good place for a bite as well. Then there's Egg Island and Bacon and Eggs Bay, Currie (on King Island), Honeywood and Gagebrook. Go To Page: 1 2
