Tassie ABCs M-words Part 2.

M is for - mail.

The mail comes in on weekdays in Tasmania. Mainland and overseas parcels and letters arrive in the morning, and there's a local delivery later. Mail takes one day to get from Tasmania to any major centre in the mainland if sent in an express envelope, and anything from two to several days if sent by ordinary post.

M is for - Marakoopa Cave.

Marakoopa Cave is near Mole Creek (see below) in north east Tasmania. This limestone cave has a wonderful glow worm display, so make sure you take the tour. M is for - markets.

Tasmania abounds in craft and produce markets. Salamanca Market in Hobart, Evandale Market in Evandale, Latrobe, Don, Devonport, Deloraine, Penguin... too many to mention. Just about wherever you go, you have only to ask to be given a load of directions. Most markets are on Saturday or Sunday.

M is for - Mary Street

There are lots of Mary Streets in Tassie, including one in East Devonport, not far from where the cross-strait ferry, The Spirit of Tasmania, docks.

M is for - Mathinna and Mathinna Falls Reserve.

Mathinna is a minute mining town 26 km from the eastern town of Fingal. It was once one of the largest towns in the state, and was a major gold mining area. The township, its associated waterfall and the reserve are named after an Aboriginal girl.

M is for - Mawbanna.

The farming district of Mawbanna lies in the north west of Tassie, not far from Stanley. If you visit Mawbanna's lush dairying country, make sure you don't miss the wonderful Dip Falls, pictured at http://www.tased.edu.au/tot/nw/mawbanna....

M is for - Maydena and the Maydena Range.

Maydena is a south western township of about 330 people. The name is from an Aboriginal word meaning "shadow". Visit Maydena's excellent home page at http://www.maydena.tco.asn.au/aboutmayde... Near the Maydena Range in the south west wilderness is Styx Valley, known as "The Valley of the Giants". For an awesome experience visit this valley for some true giants, the tallest trees in Australia and the tallest flowering plants on earth.
