Hi there! I'm having an evening by the telly tonight. What about joining me? I'll cook you my famous stir-fry (which is really more like a stir-steam) and we'll sit and do what my friend Tig calls "bagging out the telly".
It will give you a chance to see what we watch here... and hey, you might even recognise some of the programmes! You're going to stay? Excellent! I'll just put some wood on the fire before we start cooking. It's pretty cold tonight. Want to switch the telly on while we chop the carrots for the stir-fry? You want to do the cooking? Fine! I'll sit and give directions, just like a TV chef... Chop an onion and a chicken fillet and brown them lightly, then pour in two cups of chicken stock. Chop up two carrots, some celery, a head of broccoli, a quarter cauliflower and some red pepper, and add that to the pan. Put the lid on and let it steam. Meanwhile, microwave a cup of pasta with water and a teaspoon of curry powder. Fifteen minutes later, drain everything, mix pasta and vegetable mixture and it's ready to eat. Easy as anything! OK, time for the telly. It's six thirty on a Saturday, so what's the choice? SBS has a lot of foreign-language programmes, but right now they're showing World News. Landline, a rural information programme is on ABC, which is our national channel. You can check it out at this url if you're interested. http://www.abc.net.au/landline/ WIN has Australia's Funniest Home Videos. Ouch! People send in videos of themselves, their family and friends making mistakes and having minor accidents. It always looks painful to me, but Kim, the host, is always sunny. On Southern Cross, the last of the free-to-air channels, we have Unreal Stuffups, which is another programme all about mistakes. The host of this one is Tim, a funny bloke who is also a singer. How about that one? Ouch. That looked a bit painful! Have you had enough stir-fry? OK, we have some stewed apples for pudding. We peeled and stewed these back in summer, and stored them in the deep freeze. Now we thaw them out and warm them up in the microwave oven. Yum! They're just as good as they were back in March. Hmm, it's seven o'clock... we can keep on with this show, or switch over for the FINA World Swimming Championships. Do you like sport? My goodness! It goes right through to eight p.m.!
