Tassie ABCs (1).

Hi there!

We all learn our ABCs here in Tassie, so let's see what things and places we can find for each letter.

A is for Abel Tasman, the Dutch explorer for whom Tasmania is named.

A is for Adamsons Falls, near the southern Tasmanian town of Hastings. It's a two-hour walk to the falls, so bring your walking gear!

A is for Allport Street, a street in the little Central Coast seaside town of Leith.

A is for Ally - that's me!

A is for Ambleside. Funny name, isn't it? These days, Ambleside is a kind of riverside suburb of the city of Devonport. It's a pretty place, next door to the Mersey River.

A is for Anderson Bay, the beautiful site of the north eastern town of Bridport. It was named after settlers Andrew and Janet Anderson, who arrived in the district in 1833.

A is for Anglesea Barracks, a defence force recruiting base in Hobart.

A is for Ansons Bay, a popular camping place near Gladstone in the far north east. Check it out at http://www.walkabout.com.au/fairfax/loca...

A is for ants. Tassie has plenty of different kinds, including the little black sugar ants, the big jackjumpers and the bullants. Jackjumpers and bullants bite, so we all avoid their mounds and watch where we put our hands and feet when we're out in the bush.

A is for Appledore. Appledore used to be a town or district in its own right, but these days it's part of Devonport.

A is for apples... well, you knew that, didn't you?

A is for the Arthur Highway, Route A9 from Sorell to the Tasman Peninsula and Port Arthur.

A is for Avoca. To reach Avoca, you drive down the Heritage Highway, then turn off where the sign promises Avoca and Fingal. Avoca is at the junction of the South Esk and St Pauls Rivers, and was originally known as 'St Pauls Plains'. It has a flourishing historical society. Check it out at the map reference here http://www.multimap.com/wi/122162.htm

A is for The Axemens Hall of Fame, down near Bells Parade, Latrobe, on the North West Coast.

And A is also for (mainland) Australia, the big island that lies to the north of Tasmania!
