Writing your own Spreads

Though there are wonderful sources out there for finding a spread for any situation or question such as Tarot Spreads.com, sometimes you just simply cant find one that suits your needs. When this happens it is usually a good idea to write your own. You don't have to have years of experience to do this. You just have to have a basic knowledge of the tarot and an understanding of what you want to know. In this article I will give you some steps for writing your own spread.

1) The first thing you need to consider is the question itself. Your going to need to understand the topic at hand, and have a general idea of what it is about spreads dealing with this topic that you have found that you don't like.

2) The next thing you want to do is decide what it is you want to know. Tarot spreads are basically a form of detective work. One question leads to an answer that can lead to another question. With a little forethought you can make some guesses about where the first question will lead you.

3) Consider starting with the basics. Card positions such as Past influences, Future effects, Outside influences, all of these should be considered when creating a spread. They are simple questions that can be found in pretty much every spread.

4) Once you have the basics sorted out you need to look at what it is your wanting to know other spreads wont tell you. How many cards do you think you will need to get the answer? Should they be broken down into smaller questions or can you simply apply a story line quality to several cards to answer the same question?

5) Now you just need to decide on how you want to lay them out. Do you want a fancy design or do you want something simple? The truth is it doesn't matter the pattern you lay out a spread what matters is the card position meanings and the order you put them in. Don't get your cart before your horse and ask one question before another one. For instance if your wanting to know what is going to happen in June July and August you probably wouldn't want to look at August first.

Ultimately though the only things you truly need to remember is that there probably are only Five or Ten original spreads. All the rest are just different variations of those spreads. Who knows with a little imagination maybe you can be the next person to create a truly original spread
