I'd heard rumors about it before, but I didn't really believe it until I saw it one day. At first it looked like the kid was just wearing a neoprene headband, but when I paddled closer, I saw a thin wire running from it down into his spring-suit. Sure enough, the little punk was nodding his head along with his music.
If you haven't seen it already, the device is barely bigger than a pen, and totally shook-proof and waterproof. You can download almost two hours of MP3s into the little sucker, tuck it into your wetsuit and listen to all your favorite tunes while you surf. The headphone cord doubles as a leash for the headpiece, and the neoprene headband keeps in on while you slash, tuck and duck-dive, and even when you wipe-out. More and more kids are wearing these "Surfman's" these days, and a schism is beginning to develop. The older, hard-core surfers think the kids are ruining the sanctity of the silence on the water, and also making things dangerous by decreasing their ability to hear communications, such as, "Get the hell off my wave, you little punk!!" The kids don't understand why the old dudes care so much. It's just headphones, nobody else care hear it, and it makes their session more fun. Isn't it all just about having fun anyway. Why shouldn't they be allowed to listen to their music? Then, just the other day, I actually saw things get out of hand. One of the older kids (but still a young punk), fiber-glassed a small boom-box into a hollowed out spot in his surfboard. He paddled out thumping heavy bass on the new Limp Bizkit album and sat there like he was the coolest thing since the thruster. One of the older surfers paddled over to him and told him to turn it off. The kid complied, but after the guy took off on a wave, he turned it right back on, laughing to his friends. The older surfer paddled back to the kid and without saying a word, punched him right in the nose. Blood dripped down the kid's chin and he climbed back onto his board with a crazed look in his eye. The two surfers were staring right at each other, ready for more blood, when suddenly... I woke up. Ahh, it was just a dream. What an original ending to such a riveting tale. Go To Page: 1 2
