The not-so Superfriends©
A while back, we had a poll to see who the lamest member of the Superfriends was.
Wouldn't you know it -- there was a tie. The readers thought that the junior Superfriends, Wendy and Marvin, were just as lame as the king of the seven seas -- Aquaman. So, this time, we'll take a look at just why these heroes were so un-super. Wendy and Marvin This duo showed up in the first season of the show before being replaced by the similar, but not quite as cheesy Wonder Twins. Wendy and Marvin were plain old teenagers who wanted to be Superfriends. Wendy at least seemed pretty bright, but Marvin was no rocket scientist. Their job was to get in trouble so the SF could come and rescue them, lest the episode be even duller. In the SF comic books, Wendy and Marvin were given back stories that made a little more sense of them being privy to the SF's secrets. But I didn't watch the comics on Saturday morning, I watched the cartoon. Wendy and Marvin were useless. Why Wendy even associated with Marvin is beyond me. A cute teenage girl, despite what others might have you believe, generally won't hang out with a dorky guy who wears a cape and a shirt with a big "M" on it. I guess we should mention Wendy and Marvin's canine companion, Wonderdog. OK. That's that. Aquaman, one of the founding members of the Superfriends, never seemed to be a favorite. Honestly, it seems like most of the time he just looked shocked and said "Great Neptune!" a lot. As comic book fans know, Aquaman today is not the way he was presented on the Superfriends. Aquaman in the comics is cool. But again, we're dealing with the cartoon. The masses have spoken, and they decree that the swift and powerful monarch of the ocean is a dork. Watch the show sometime and pay attention to how the other heroes treat Aquaman. If something big is going on, Superman flies off, followed closely by Batman and Robin in their Batjet. Wonder Woman gets stuck giving a ride to Aquaman. Sometimes they'd send Zan and Jayna with him. Why do they give the A-man so much grief? I don't know how to put this delicately, but he's an idiot. Not that any of the SF were mental giants in the show, but still... When sun creatures turn Metropolis into a raging inferno, Aquaman saves the day by opening the floodgates on the Metropolis Aquaduct. This puts out the fire, but also leaves buildings stories deep in water. Go To Page: 1 2
